[UD News] October Greetings

Smoke Cleansing Offering

Every Sunday morning we share a smoke cleansing offering ceremony. Just a one hour service, come join us to engage in this Tibetan Buddhist practice of clearing of the nonphysical through aromatic smoke.

Camping Retreat

Last weekend, a group of us gathered at Lake James for a weekend camping-retreat, invited by Dr. Lye to participate in a set of teachings on Mahāmudrā, a system of practice particularly in the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. It was also “family time” as Dr. Lye’s godkids and families joined us. We were also mindful of the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene.

We plan to make this at least an annual program. So be on a lookout for such opportunities!

Weekday Practice

Last week Dr. Lye started a daily weekday practice, at 8:30 AM New York Time, on Zoom. Join him and others using the meeting information below

Buddha's Breath

Learn the Buddha’s Instructions for Meditation

Dorlop Rinpoche, Dr. Lye will offer a 2-day weekend retreat on “Buddha’s Breath” at Urban Dharma. This program will offer participants an opportunity to practice HH Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche’s “Shravasti Meditation” system which skillfully weaves together the historical Buddha’s main method of practice as found in the Anapanasati Sutta together with Mahāmudrā and Zen approaches to training the mind and a set of practical yogic exercises.

Although there is Zoom option to participate from afar, it is highly recommended that you try to attend in person to experience this profound approach is a fully embodied way. In-person participation is limited to 30 persons.

Zen Flute Meditation

Please join us on the evening of October 23rd for a special performance and meditation guided by Shakuhachi (Zen Flute) practitioner Travis Roman.

The Shakuhachi has direct connection to the Meditation and Zen practice, at one point in history enjoying a dedicated school of Zen Mindfulness practice. Travis is offering a Mindfulness Session of Suizen (blowing meditation); the session includes a brief discussion regarding the history of the Shakuhachi and breath work techniques. The Shakuhachi, when applied with proper intention, is a pure mindfulness tool that takes the listener on a contemplative journey of enlightenment.

Unlike other sound healing/baths that involve numerous combinations of sounds and instruments, this experience focuses on simplicity and minimalism at the center the mind.

All are welcome to attend!

Remembering & Renewing

Don't forget to mark your calendars for the upcoming "Remembering & Renewing" program. Come to enjoy sweet & savory treats, bring a photo of a deceased loved one for the alter, and enjoy the evening of festivities & renewal. We will have live music, various vendors from our community, and a silent auction with many marvelous items! Look out for more details in the coming weeks.

There are still a few vendor spots available, so if you want to be included, please reply to this email.

Urban Dharma

The Walk For Peace in North Carolina On January 17th, Dr. Lye and members of Urban Dharma joined many others in Salisbury & Spencer, North Carolina, to pay respects to the monks undertaking the Walk for Peace from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington, DC. Dr. Lye shares some explanations of the tradition these monks are practicing: “Thudong” is Thai/Lao for “dhutanga” – a set of 13 ascetic practices that the historical Buddha recommended and allowed for his disciples. Dhutanga practices include...

Happy 2026! We had a full house during our "Endings, Beginnings" New Year's event, preparing for the end of 2025 by chanting the Vajrasattva Hundred Syllable Mantra to clear and leave behind all that we do not wish to take with us into 2026. In Asian Buddhist traditions, cleaning and clearing the negatives of the year coming to a close is a more common emphasis than making new resolutions for the new year per se. Thus, every year on New Year’s Eve, Urban Dharma hosts and karmic cleansing...

Endings, Beginnings: A Candlelight Vigil of Release & Renewal Mark your calendars for our annual New Year's Eve service, "Endings, Beginnings." As the year comes to an end, let us gather to purify the past year's negativities through chanting the Vajrasattva purification mantra. The Buddhist tradition recognizes the power of examining our past actions. Recalling those which brought happiness to us and others can help us to repeat those beneficial activities, and conversely reflecting on our...
